Just weeks after a Desoto County, MS bus wreck killed 2 and left dozens more injured, tragedy struck the Mid-South again. This time the victim is a 9 year old boy from Memphis named Kameron Johnson. His friends and family called him Kam Kam, according to the Memphis Daily News.
The deadly wreck occurred in the early morning hours of December 3, 2018, as the bus filled with members of the Orange Mound Youth Football team traveled back from a championship game in Fort Worth, TX. The wreck occurred on I-30, west of Benton, Arkansas around 2:40 a.m. The driver told investigators that she lost control of the bus causing it to exit the interstate and roll over. The bus was owned and operated by Scott Shuttle Service in Somerville, Tennessee.
Although the reason the bus driver lost control is not yet known, one cannot wonder whether fatigue played a role in the crash, especially since the wreck occurred in the middle of the night. After all, drowsy driving is a leading cause of car and truck crashes. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, “The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) reported that 13 percent of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers were considered to have been fatigued at the time of their crash.”
This wreck is particularly heartbreaking since the bus was filled with kids, many of whom had never traveled outside the Memphis area.
