The Shelby County Health Department announced today that guest who visited The Guest House at Graceland from May 15 to 26, 2017 may have been exposed to bacteria called Legionella, which can lead to Legionnaires Disease.  The bacteria is ingested  when people breathe in mist or vapor containing the bacteria.

This outbreak follows another similar problem at the La Quinta Inn on Millbranch Road near Graceland that arose in August 2016.

Legionnaires Disease can cause signs and symptoms that are very similar to  forms of pneumonia, which sometimes creates difficulty in correctly diagnosing the condition.  Some of the common signs and symptoms are:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Muscle ache

Legionnaires’ Disease can be treated with specialized antibiotics.   In most cases the disease can be treated successfully and the infected person will not suffer long term effects.  People who are elderly, who have other health problems, or whose treatment is delayed may experience complications, such as respiratory failure, sepsis, and even death.

At Bailey & Greer, we have experience handling lawsuits involving Legionnaires Disease outbreaks.  If you believe you have been infected by this potentially dangerous bacteria, you should call an attorney as soon as possible.
